Today there are approximately 850 different companies in the building, employing about 20,000 people. The companies are involved primarily in the clothing industry, such as footwear, sportswear, and men's and boy's wear. There are nearly 100 companies dealing in domestic and foreign brands of shoes, with more than $1 billion in annual sales which occupy the building. Also there are more than 500 makers (or representatives of makers) of shirts, neckwear, hats, sportswear, nightwear, hosiery, underwear and accessories. More buyers of menswear (exclusive of coats and suits) come to the Empire State Building than to any other building in the world.
